Listed as one of the bloodest Texas feuds (C.L. Sonnichsen, Ten Texas Feuds (Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press, 1957; rpt. 1971), the Mason County War or "Hoo Doo" War lasted only two years, but the cultural and family scars exist even today.  Following are photographs of the reenactment (2005) which was sponsored by the Mason County Historical Society.  Included in the photos are the vigilantee's jail break, frontier justice hangin', and Deputy Sheriff John Worhle, standing by the well before he was killed by Scott Cooley, a former Texas Ranger.
